Does anyone know any good herbal books. I’m looking for something that gives a directory of what an herb can be used for the history of the herb the history of its uses.
Are you looking for books from a magical perspective or a medicinal one? And then, a second question, are you wanting an overall book or one that focuses on a specific region?
I’m wanting to use it for Magical purposes and I think overall I do live in the south though
I think the most common book recommended for herbs in witchcraft is Scott Cunningham’s book, Cunningham’s Encyclopedia of Magical Herbs. I think there are also a few other more recent publications. I haven’t read them, but I’ll list them here for you to look at.
-
The Green Witch’s Guide to Herbal Magick by Annabel Margaret (this one comes out on October 24th, written by The Green Witch on YouTube)
-
Green Witchcraft: A Practical Guide to Discovering the Magic of Plants, Herbs, Crystals, and Beyond by Paige Vanderbeck
-
The Modern Witchcraft Guide to Magickal Herbs by Judy Ann Nock
-
Herb Magic: An Introduction to Magical Herbalism and Spells by Patti Wigington
I’d also say to look into different field guides for herbs and plants that are local to you. For example, I would look at a website such as this one by the University of Florida. I would also look at a book such as Florida’s Edible Wild Plants written by Peggy Sias Lantz. These books show native plants in my area that I could work with in a mundane and magical sense.
You might also find another book useful, one that’s older and available for free on Project Gutenberg. It’s called Plant Lore, Legends, and Lyrics by Richard Folkard. It contains folklore and legends about plants from all over the world! For example, here’s a short statement on Rosemary.
Rosemary, worn about the body, strengthens the memory.
